Not only is it a place of amazing natural beauty, it is also packed with fabulous places to go and do things. We've just come back from our trip away with the "Clan". Now, it's worth explaining that the "Clan" consists of various people whom we've been going away with for an annual long weekend trip away in the UK for the last few years. The "Clan" consists of (from left to right): Colin, Peter, Dipti (with Mya), Clare, Rob, Candy (with Tomas), Malini (with Callum), Aftab, Teresa (with Aisha), John (with Maya), little Aadam in front and Lalitha. As you can see, it is a pretty big bunch of people! This year we hired and stayed in Heywood Manor - a huge place with lots of grounds and space for the kids to play in, down in the New Forest. We went to the forest for a walk one day, then to Beaulieu the next day, followed by a trip to the zoo on the way home. Couple some great days out with great company (both for the kids and the adults!) and it resulted in a really fun weekend. We're already planning 2008! 9th April 2007 Hello everyone. Happy Easter! I hope you all got your fair share of chocolate eggs! We've all just come back from a really fantastic few days away with Nan and Grandad Harris in Aunby, which is a tiny hamlet just outside of Stamford. A beautiful part of the countryside with lots to see and do. Nan and Grandad had lots of fun looking after Mya. Mya, of course, was a little angel, until she caught Daddy's cold and then she turned into a snot-machine. The underfloor heating of the cottage also seemed to have a dramatic effect on Mya - she only had to be sat down on it for a few minutes and she'd be parping off like a gooden'. By the end of the week, we were refering to her farts as Mya-Power - the next source of renewable energy! We went to Barnsdale Gardens (famous for appearing on Gardeners World), Rutland Waters (a beautiful resevoir), Peterborough (shopping!), and the historical towns of Stamford and Oakham. Not to mention driving through miles and miles and miles of great twisty turny country roads, courtesy of the latest in-car navigation system - "Graham Graham". Whilst we were away, Mya started showing definite signs of getting to grips with moving on all fours. She could do the legs, but hadn't quite worked out how to tie in the arms at the same time. However, since she's been back, she's mastered the art of crawling (much to Mummy and Daddy's joy) and can now be seen doing 30-40mph down the dining-room straight! Below is a link to a video clip - I'm not sure if it will work for all of you, but have a go and drop me an email and let me know if it works or not - it's 2.5mb so will be slow if you're on dialup. It's not long now until we join the "Clan" for our annual long weekend away - this year we're off to the New Forest. Four days away with a house full of people, kids, and babies may not sound like fun to some people, but believe me, none of us would miss it for the world. I can't remember exactly, but I think this will be our 6th or 7th trip away. It's always great to catch up and have some fun. Speak soon! 18th March 2007 Priorities,
priorities! HAPPY MOTHERS DAY! Can you believe it? Mya is now over 9 months old! Well, it's fair to say we've had some dramas over the last couple of weeks, and we definitely have some news to report. First of all the drama - Mya's first trip to the hospital A&E department! Just over a week ago Mummy and Mya went around to Grandma's house in East Ham to meet up with her cousins and aunties - a great time was had by all! However, later that evening when Daddy got home, Mya was just finishing and then puked the whole lot up - and my, my, there was a lot of puke! Mya wouldn't keep anything down - not even mummy's milk or plain water! We were so concerned we decided it would be safer to get her checked out and ran her down to the hospital. We were seen quite quickly and thankfully the doctors confirmed that there was a horrible bug going around and that as long as Mya seemed like herself in between throwing up, and was able to take some fluids, she'd be fine. Indeed, whilst we were there, at least 3 or 4 other worried mums and dads brought their kids along with exactly the same symptoms. Mya is very nearly back to her normal self, and is eating more and more each day. Being the considerate and caring girl that she is, Mya was kind enough to pass the bug onto Mummy last weekend, and Daddy on Monday. Bless. The other news to report is that we've been having a couple of sleepness nights. Nothing unusual with that, you might say, but it's because Mya is teething and has two little pegs popping out of her lower jaw. This, of course, makes breast feeding a little more interesting - Mummy has been yelping every now and then. Mya is also just starting to work out that pushing herself back on her head is not the most efficient mode of transport, and that moving forward on all fours seems like quite a good idea. She's not fully there yet, but it's starting to happen. 25th February 2007 Hello everyone and a belated Happy New Year from Pete, Dips and Mya! Firstly, I'd like to apologise to all of our regular visitors who have been without an update on Mya since before Christmas. I could claim that it was because we've swapped website hosting companies (which we have), but the simple truth is that we've just been to busy (read lazy) to update the site. Well, Mya is certainly growing up fast. She's now well over 15lb, sitting up confidently on her own, and her personality is becoming clearer and clearer each day. She's been through the wars a little recently having had at least 5 colds and last week she was on anti-biotics for a nasty little bug that's doing the rounds which was making her throw up most of her meals. Thankfully the banana-flavoured medicine did the trick in a couple of days and she's back to eating with gusto! Just before Christmas, Mya enjoyed a lovely evening out to celebrate Grandma Barbara's birthday. She was out cold most of the evening, but woke up later to look around and became the focus of attention. Of course, one of the big things that happened since the last update is that Mya is now having proper food like sweet potato, carrots, peas, pear and pasta - all lovingly home-cooked by mummy. Mya seems to like most things, although she finds some fruits a little too tart. It's certainly fun at meal times now! Christmas was a lovely family affair with Grandma Margaret and Grandad Graham coming down from Scotland tostay as well as regular visits from Grandma Barbara and Grandad Ian. Mya, not unsurprisingly, got the most presents... Since Christmas, we've all been trying to get over one cold before then getting another, plus waiting for the iminent arrival of teeth! Everything goes in the mouth at the moment and Mya's tastes are expanding each day. It wasn't long after Christmas that Mya got her first view of snow and, to be honest, she wasn't all that keen... Now we're looking forward to the end of March when we're going to be going away on a short break with Grandma and Grandad from Scotland, then we'll have another long weekend away with the Clan to look forward to in the New Forest. Speak to you all soon... 2nd December 2006 As soon as she got rid of her last cold, she's caught another! Mya has been a little unsettled over the last couple of days. It's possible that Daddy past on his germs, and as sods law would have it, Mummy is now coming down with it as well! Christmas is fast looming, and to be honest, we can't wait. What with Grandma and Grandad Scotland coming down for Christmas Day and Grandma and Grandad Eltham booked for Boxing day, it is going to be a lovely family time. Since the last update, Mya has continued to grow and develop. We think she is starting to teeth as she has periods when she cannot stop dribbling and as very aggistated. She loves being surprised (daddy saying BOO! usually does it) and can't get enough of kicking her legs and grabbing things with her hands. The lovely Teresa came round not so long ago with Aadam and Aisha. I can remember craddling Aisha in my arms last Christmas, shortly after she was born and thinking then that it wouldn't be long until I'd be craddling my own son or daughter. Aisha is now nearly walking and has a fantastic personality. My friend Aadam continues to delight and entertain whenever we meet - he is a wonderful little boy! There was a little family get together in East Ham last weekend where all the sisters and their kids met up. Whilst we didn't managed to get everyone in the room at the same time, it was somewhat of an achievement nevertheless. 12th November 2006 Well, Autumn has definitely set in; lower temperatures, darker days, and with leaves a falling! Mya has gotten rid of her cold and is back to her normal self. In fact, she's been quite remarkable over the last two weeks. She'll now start to snooze in the evening about 8 o'clock, wake up for a last feed sometime before midnight, we'll put her down in her cot and she'll sleep through till 7:30/8am the next morning. It is, as you can imagine, wonderful! Mummy and Daddy both being able to get at least 7/8 hours of sleep at night! Mya experienced Halloween recently. We did the traditional thing (i.e spent £2 on a pumpkin we're not going to eat and then gave away half a hundred weight of chocolate to complete strangers at the front door). She also watched in mild amusement as Daddy ran back and forth in the back garden lighting fireworks for bonfire night. Uncle Che came by recently to say hello and tell Mya the latest installment of funny stories that seem to make up his life (having to stand near naked in the street after a fire alarm went off whilst he was in the sauna, and finding his nice, clean, powdery passport in the washing machine just before he needed it for a trip to Jamaica, etc). We also had a visit one night from Rashni, Mark and little Maia who were at our NCT classes. Daddy used to go to school with Rashni, so we relived some old memories over some chicken fajitas! We
think (as do all parents) that Mya is intelligent
for her age. The way she sits and talks to
us in babytalk for hours on end. The way she's
already started to scribble the technical
plans of the next generation of wireless network
she wants installed at home for her laptop
(only kidding). But, she does appear to have
a fascination with books. Here, caught on
two different occasions is our Mya, engrossed,
with Maisy by the Sea. Some might say it is
simply the bright colours and high contrast
printing, but Mummy and Daddy know different...
;-) 26th October 2006 Poor
little Mya! Mya had a visit from Auntie Claire last week, all the way from Colchester, and we also met up with "the Clan" for Sunday lunch which was very pleasant (even if the weather wasn't!) You
know, I can't tell you how wonderful it is
to be a dad. I always had high expectations
of what it would be like, and how wonderful
it would be to look after our first born child.
Yet these first four and a bit months with
our beautiful Mya have exceeded anything I
could possibly have imagined. 16th October 2006 Well, I said it would be a while until the next update! We had a great holiday in Scotland. Mya thoroughly enjoyed spending a week with her Nan and Grandad - she was spoilt rotton, and shown off to all of her Nan's friends. We all really enjoyed the fresh air and countryside, taking in plenty of walks, picnics next to lochs, and shopping trips to Inverness. Here are some pictures of the scenery we had to endure... ...and some of us and what we got up to... Mya has taken a couple of important steps recently - she now regularly sleeps for six or more hours on the trot at night (much to mummy and daddy's delight) and she is also now sleeping in her big cot in her own room! With lots of toys and pictures to look at and musical mobiles and projectors to listen to, Mya is sleeping, ahem, like a baby. She now weighs 11lb 9oz and is growing an average of 1cm in length a week, and 1oz in weight a day! Mya also joined us on a trip down to Kent on Saturday, in memory of Great Grandad Jack and Great Grandma Ivy, who both passed away earlier this year. It was a true Streatfield clan get together with Grandad Ian, Grandma Barbara, Great Uncle Roger, Great Auntie Carol, Uncle Carl, Auntie Gillian, Cousin Jake and Dick and Audrey (I can't work out what relation they are!). Mya and Jake got on like a house on fire and we finished the day with a wander along the famous Tankerton beaches. More soon... 26th September 2006 It's been a while since I last updated these pages. That's been for no other reason than pure laziness! We've really been enjoying Mya over the last few weeks. She never seems to stop smiling at us now, she even tries to smile and cry simultaneously without much success. She's also continuing to put on weight. Dipti had he weighed yesterday and she clocked in at 10lb 14oz. We're rapidly working our way through the different sizes of baby clothes and we're so grateful to Jigs for passing on so many of Ria's clothes for Mya to wear! Both Dipti and I have been busy with the camera over the last couple of weeks. Dips has been able to capture some wonderful moments with Mya and has produced some absolutely fantastic photos... Most recently, Dips took some black and white photos with our digital camera and the results were stunning. Two of my absolute favourites... Dips and I celebrated our 2nd wedding anniversary last week (thanks to those of you who sent cards!) and we marked the event by spending the day together with Mya. So what did we decide to do having booked a day off work? Well, it's obvious! We went to work! Yes, we popped in to see Dipti's work mates who very kindly provided oodles of chocolate cake and plenty of adoring "ahhs" and "oohs" when they met Mya. We're going to be taking Mya to see her Gran and Grandad in bonnie Scotland soon so there won't be any updates on here for a week or three. So to finish off, a few more photos (of mine, this time) which I found either cute, quite amusing, or simply proved Mya can be grumpy, as well as an Angel... 3rd September 2006 Mya has been charming the pants off Dipti and I this week becuase she's learnt how to smile! All you need to do is look her in the face, pull a big smile or coochie coo her and within moments she'll beam back at you with her beautiful gummy grin. We had a lovely visit from Richard, Marie, Charlotte and William yesterday, along with Grandad Ian and Nanny Barbara. Dad and I used to work with Richard in British Steel days and he now lives up in Sheffield with his wife and two wonderful kids. Charlotte is about 18 months old and is fiercely independent, and William has just a month or so on Mya. It was great to see them all! 21st August 2006 Well, it's been quite a while since my last update here and Mya is growing like a good 'en! She was weighed again today by the health visitor and is now a bouncing 9lb 2oz! She also seems to be in the middle of a growth spurt as she is hardly stopping drinking at the moment and kept us awake all last night! We now regularly take Mya out: Dips frequently walks down with her to meet me from the station in the evening, we took her round to see Grandad's house this weekend in Eltham for the first time, and of course, there are the shopping trips to Tescos... Last weekend we were invited round to Doreen and Grahams (Teresa and Clares mum and dad) for dinner and a get together. We had a great time, even though Mya didn't get to play with Callum, Aadam or Aisha because she spent most of the afternoon asleep! But of course WE had a great time and she did eventually wake up! 11th August 2006 It's just gone six o'clock in the morning and I'm sat at the computer with Mya on one arm who is slowly dozing off to sleep. She's not had a good night, having been up from midnight till 2am, and then waking again at 4am until now when Daddy's taken over from an exhausted Mummy! It must be all the growing that is making her so restless. She was weighed and measured again earlier in the week and now weighs over 8lbs and has grown a centimetre for every week she's been alive (seven, to be precise). Mya has had some enjoyable trips out in her super-duper buggy (which Mummy and Daddy are now dab hands at erecting and folding down in 2 seconds flat after some workshopping and coaching by Nan and Grandad Scotland when they were down) as well as in her front-mounted sling. The other night I took her for a quick wander to Tescos and Dips has been bringing her to meet me a the station quite regularly - a very welcome sight after a tiring day in the office! We haven't been taking a huge amount of photos, but I couldn't resist this one of her doing a sky-diving impression... 31st July 2006 Well, to say Mya is feeding well would, indeed, be an understatement! She certainly appears to be filling out as well, or, as Dips puts it "turning into a roly poly!" Mya is still having difficulty distinguishing between day and night (thinking that 3am is the best time to play with mummy and daddy), but since it's been a bit cooler, she definitely appears to be more settled and comfortable. We've continued to recieve some wonderful and beautiful clothes and gifts from people - which is useful becuase she is growing out of clothes quite quickly! She now seems to be quite comfortable in clothes sized for a 9lb baby - mainly because of her length. Mum
and Graham came down on Wednesday and have been
staying with us. I had Friday off and we all went
out shopping together. It was Mya's first trip out
other than a quick jaunt to the health centre on
Wednesday for her BCG injection. Dips tried out
Mya in her front-mounted rucksack carry case thing
and both girls were as happy as Larry wandering
around the Next sale. Later in the day we set off
for a nice walk down to Clayhall Park (it was the
maiden voyage of the Bugaboo buggy!) and we sat
in the shade of a large tree and had tea and scones!
It's been really great to see Mum and Graham, and they've really enjoyed spending so much time with Mya. They couldn't believe how much she'd grown since they saw her after she was born! Mum volunteered to look after Mya a couple of nights so Dips and I could catch up on some sleep, which we duly did, and were extremely grateful. We're planning on flying Mum down every other weekend to do repeat the process. 23rd July 2006 It's
strange to think that Mya was due to be born yesterday!
The heat we've been having really has been excessive. Mya must think we live in an exotic country - the temperature has barely gone below 26 degrees at night, and has regulalry hit 34 degrees during the day. Of course, that means Mya wakes up a lot feeling thirsty, has a quick drink, then is back off to sleep again. We've
had visits from lots of people over the last few weekends:
Mya is really looking forward to this week tho, as Grandma Margaret and Grandad Graham are coming down from Scotland for the weekend. And to top it all off, Mya and Dips will be allowed outside from tomorrow so will be able to get some fresh air and put the buggy to some use. We dressed Mya up today in a lovely little dress and tooks some photos... 19th July 2006 I
had to add a little note today as Dips was seen by the
Health Visitor earlier and Mya weighed and guess what?
She's now 6lb 6oz (or 2.9kg in modern speak)! Needless to say, we're very pleased and chuffed. 16th July 2006 Well, another week has flown by. Going back to work was hard, leaving my girls alone at home, but Dips and Mya have coped well without me! ;-) Sleep deprivation has started to kick in this week for both Dips and I. Mya has some good nights (when, for a brief, naive moment, we think we have cracked it and understand how to have a settled night) and some bad nights (when reality kicks in and we realise we haven't the foggiest!). One benefit of sleep deprivation though is that one's bed has never seemed more comfortable. We could be sleeping on a bed of nails and it would still seem like the softest, most cosy surface in the world. Mya keeps us amused all the time with the cute faces she pulls and noises she makes. Like the logical, pragmatic people we are, we constantly try to understand what the formula is that makes Mya restful so we can continually apply it. When, and if we ever figure it out, we'll let you know! It's amazing how the simplest things provide so much joy. Mya sneezing or having the hiccups gives us both so much happiness we find ourselves laughing together at the cute, and downright disgusting noises she makes. Like her father, Mya is proving to be a world-class farter. We haven't taken a great deal of photos this week as we've just been getting into our new routines and enjoying her. However the other day, after feeding, she was so sleepy having had a big feed we did take this rather cute photo of her... 8th July 2006 I can't believe how the time has flown! It feels like just a couple of days since I last updated the site, yet it has been over a week. Life at home with the girls is great. We've gotten ourselves into a number of routines which gives each day some structure. I've been making the most of having the girls to myself 24 hours a day this week as I'm back to work next week, which will surely be a shock to the system! Mya is growing each day and becoming more and more of a character. She demands her feeds at anything between two and four hours apart and seems to enjoy waking Mummy and Daddy up a 2am in the morning for a play. She has already started to out-grow her "Early Baby" sized clothes and is now working her way through her "Tiny Baby" wardrobe. Dipti is doing such a grand job, and one I don't think I could match. I manage to wake for some of the feeds during the night, help out with changing Mya and some mornings when she simply wont settle I take her downstairs whilst Dips grabs an hour or so sleep. But I look on in wonder at how devoted Dipti is. Whilst it doesn't surprise me, because I know what a wonderful mother Dipti will be, she continues to leave me speechless and full of unabating admiration. Many thanks, once again, to you all for sending such beautiful cards, presents, flowers and baloons. We're going to keep them all together as a memory of Mya's birth along with the numerous emails of best wishes. Dips and I will try to keep updating this site regulalry with more pictures and information on how Mya is doing, but the updates may only be weekly from now on. Thanks for all your feedback - hope you continue to check out the site every now and then to see how we're all getting on. 30th June 2006 The last couple of days have been lovely. With Dips and Mya finally settling in, we've started developing routines based around, not unsurprisingly, Myas feeds and changes. It's very touching to be wandering around the house and hear Dips talking to Mya as they get changed or feed. Last night we got out a couple of the toys and play mats Mya had been bought as presents - she loved them! The carpets have finally all gone down and they finish off the place really well. It is SO nice to have our lounge, dining room, day room and hallway back to normal! It's also nice to be able to walk around the place barefoot without having to think about treading on gripper rods or nails. For your information, I've made some updates to these pages so that if you click on the pictures on this page, they should open up larger in a seperate window. We've had some great feedback about the website so we're hoping to keep the updates coming over the next few weeks and months. Feel free to drop us a mail at strepsils@msn.com. 29th June 2006 Well! What a busy few days we've had in the Streatfield household. The day after Dips and Mya came home, I sent them off to stay at Dipti's mums for a couple of days so I could finish the decorating without worrying about paint fumes and dust. HUGE THANKS must go to Auntie Anna, Uncle Brad and Grandad Ian, without whom it would have been impossible to completely repaint the hall, landing, lounge and dining room in such a short time. Travelling back and forth to East Ham each night to stay with Mya and Dips wasn't ideal, but at least I got to help Dipti out with feeds during the night (I tend to be chief burper and nappy changer) and Dips and Mya came back on Tuesday to a freshly painted house. The new carpets go down today, so by the end of the day all the decorating and changes to the house will be complete and we'll finally be able to relax and settle in properly! Mya had her fist visit from the midwife yesterday who was VERY pleased with her progress. Given that babies typically loose about 10% of their birth weight in the first ten days they are alive, we were chuffed to learn that Mya has not only put that weight back on, but also an ounce or so more. Both mum and daughter were thoroughly checked out and given the thumbs up. Mya is feeding anything between two and four hours apart, which of course means that we're getting anything from one to three hours sleep inbetween - if we're lucky! But it doesn't seem to matter. Our lives now revolve around Mya. Neither of us could tell you what day of the week it is, let alone what time of day. We're both working to Mya-time now, and it is wonderful. Last
night Mya awoke quite frequently for feeds and inbetween Dipti
and I would quickly slip back into slumber, curling up in bed
both facing the crib. Watching and listening to my two girls
as they squeaked, hurrumphed, snored and whimpered in their
sleep was another of those seemingly unending magical moments.
24th June 2006 They're home! :-) Dips and Mya were finally discharged yesterday (Friday) afternoon at about 1pm after Mya's jaundice test showed no significant increase despite being off the lamp for over eight hours. The midwives were happy with her health, and very happy with her feeding which is now regular and strong. I found it hard to wipe the broad smile off my face as we dressed up Mya in her outfit, said goodbye to the nurses and midwives, left Elm Ward in King Georges and walked out into the fresh air and bright sunshine. Given it was Dipti's first escape to the outside world for over a week, she was pretty happy too! Mya enjoyed the ride in Daddys car and has since had the full tour of her new home. She seems quite fascinated with her new surroundings and she's told me that she's really looking forward to moving into her own room when the time is right. I kept on finding Dipti wandering around the house stroking all the surfaces and sitting in chairs saying "it's so nice to be home" - she really had missed the place being cooped up in hospital. Dipti and Mya will be heading off to stay with Nanny Pratima and Grandad Mahendra for a day or so later on today to allow me to finish off the remaining painting and decorating with the help of Grandad Ian, Auntie Anna and Uncle Brad who are all coming over on Sunday. Then, once it's all done, we can really settle in and get used to being a family together. 22nd June 2006 Well, today marks Mya's first week of life! She has reacted really well to her phototherapy which has now ceased. Her jaundice levels have dropped from over 300 (the treatment level is 250) to just over 150. Dipti and Mya are continuing to be monitored with a further test scheduled for late tonight. If her levels continue to stay low, without being under the "lamp", they'll be discharged very soon - so fingers crossed everyone! A huge thanks to everyone who has sent us cards, flowers and gifts. They are very much appreciated and I've set them up in a nice display at home ready to greet Dipti and Mya when they make their grand entrance! I got just a tad emotional last night when it came to leaving them. No matter how much I tell myself that Dips and Mya are in the right place being looked after by professionals, having to leave them in the hospital ward each night tears me apart. After the labour and birth, I didn't think the respect and admiration I had for Dipti could get any higher, but seeing her care for and nurture Mya each day leaves me speechless. She's only been in the role for 7 days, yet Dips is proving to be the most wonderful mother Mya could ask for. 21st June 2006 Following her phototherapy treatment overnight Mya's jaundice levels have halved and they are now well below normal levels. She's continued to have more therapy during the day with further tests scheduled for tonight and tomorrow morning to confirm the downward trend. Much to our delight, Mya has also learnt how to breast feed and is now never happier than when she is suckling up to mummy. 20th June 2006 Mya is progressing well and remains at King Georges for the moment as she's having some phototherapy treatment for jaundice. Her feeding has improved dramatically today, almost doubling her intake over the previous 24 hours - if she continues at this rate, she'll be drinking enough milk daily to fill Wembley Stadium by the end of the month! 19th June 2006 Hi! Peter here. Well isn't she a beauty? Mya Zara Streatfield joined us on Thursday 15th June 2006 at 21:06 weighing in at 4lb 8.5oz (or 2.05kg). Born five weeks earlier than we expected, she has spent her first few days working out what to do with her mouth when presented with a teat or tit. Both Dipti and Mya are healthy and well and are expected home soon. It's difficult to explain how you feel when presented with this bundle of joy. Most of you that know me will know I can be an emotional bloke. Trying to explain the pride and respect I feel for both of my wonderful girls is impossible. Being with Dips during her labour and the birth of Mya was an unimaginably awe-inspiring experience. It seemed to be an insurmountable task at first; despite having been to all the classes and read all the books, being there with it all happening to you and your wife was, at times, surreal. Dips rose to the occasion amazingly and I simply can't express how proud of her I am. Now
that Mya is here - a tangible breathing bundle of hands, legs, bones,
skin, lungs, eye-lashes, nostrils and all the other ridiculously small
body parts bolted together that make her, it sometimes doesn't feel
like it's sunk in yet. I can't wait for Dips and Mya to come home. Leaving them in the hospital each night is a heart-wrenching experience which I could do without. I want to spend each and every living minute with my girls.
and Mya. ...........
